Ep. 399 of The Sunday #NYTReadalong (The 10-Minute Challenge with Andrew Sondern, Deputy Dir. News Design, NYT)

Updated: 7 hours ago

“Look. No, Really Look. Can you spend 10 minutes with a work of art?” Andrew Sondern, Deputy Director of News Design for The New York Times did the print design for “The 10-Minute Challenge.” He’ll be our guest on a special 90-minute edition of The Sunday #NYTReadalong. During the last half of the show, we will review the Sunday paper with Andrew.

Sree Sreenivasan and I are hosting Ep. 399 of The Sunday #NYTReadalong on June 14. We will be live at 8:30 a.m. ET, 12:30 p.m. GMT and 6:00 p.m. IST. If you miss the show, you can always watch the replay, right on this page.

The 10-Minute Challenge

Per Andrew, “ 'The 10-Minute Challenge' " invites readers to slow down, focus and spend some time just looking at artwork.

We've selected six of our best challenges and printed them poster-size in a special, pull-apart section on bright white newsprint.

On the front of each sheet, you’ll find a reproduction of a work of art; the largest is a three-foot wide tri-fold of “The Garden of Earthly Delights” by Hieronymus Bosch.

When you’re finished looking, flip the sheet over for a guide to the artwork. Put them on your wall or spread them out on your coffee table, set a timer (or don't), and dive in!”

The Sunday #NYTReadalong has a new format and several new features

  • 60 Minutes: We have shortened the show to a crisp 60 minutes, ending at 9:30am ET.

  • Occasional Guests / More Time with the Newspaper: We will still have guests on occasion, but we will spend more time focusing on the journalism we have come to love (and occasionally question).

  • Viewer Input: We will also solicit more of your input.

  • Spotify / Apple Podcasts: We have launched the audio podcast version of the #NYTReadalong on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. We will upload each week’s episode shortly after the show is over. In addition to recent episodes, we have about 15 of our favorites from our archives.

  • New Sponsor: We also have a new sponsor the Graphic History Company led by Prof. Walter Greason and Tim Fielder.
