#NYTReadalong | Ken Tingley (Retired Editor, The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y.)

Updated: Oct 3, 2022

This week, our guest on @Sree's Sunday #NYTReadalong is Ken Tingley, a retired editor of The Post-Star in Glens Falls, N.Y.. He is the author of two books, “The Last American Editor: Chronicling Life, Death, Triumph and Tragedy in a Small Town" (2021) and "The Last American Newspaper: An Institution in Peril, Through the Eyes of a Small-Town Editor" (2022). Neil Parekh will be the guest host.

His most recent book reveals what is happening in small communities across the United States as their newspapers struggle to survive. It celebrates journalism's role in chronicling the news and events of small towns and the inspirational professionals who persevere. Importantly, it asks the question: who will be the community watchdog of the future? This book memorializes the American newspaper through the story of The Post-Star of Glens Falls, N.Y..

Ken compiled a series of vignettes that depict the newspaper's coverage over the years. They provide a glimpse behind the newsroom curtain through the stories of the investigative journalism done in small towns.

In addition to his books, Ken has a Substack newsletter, “The Front Page - Upstate New York,” chronicling his observations about Glens Falls, Lake George and Saratoga Springs in upstate New York.

We’ll also discuss “The Quiet Epidemic,” a documentary about Lyme Disease playing at film festivals around the country and the rise of Rep. Elise Stefanik, a once-moderate Republican who is now a staunch supporter of Donald Trump.

Ken will also share his thoughts on Aaron Judge’s pursuit of the steroid-free Major League Baseball single-season home run record. (He thinks several recent players should have an asterisk next to their name…)
