"When Africa Comes to America"
From Columbia University Press’s description of the book: “Neeraj Kaushal argues that in the second half of the century, Africans will account for the largest share of immigrants to the United States. Challenging the view that African emigration is driven by poverty, war, and disaster, she demonstrates that the continent’s sizable and growing middle-class has both the aspirations and the means to relocate.”
The publisher says the book also explores the political, economic and demographic consequences of African immigration, including how African immigrants may navigate American racial hierarchies and how their growing presence could affect what it means to be Black in America.
Mae Ngai, author of “The Chinese Question: The Gold Rushes and Global Politics,” writes: “When Africa Comes to America shows that the next generation of immigrants to the United States will increasingly be Black people from Africa and the Caribbean. Neeraj Kaushal considers the consequences for American race relations and the possibility that Black Africans will be the next model minority. Neeraj Kaushal is professor of social policy at Columbia University’s School of Social Work and a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.
