Mass Shootings
As of Friday afternoon, Oct. 16, Mass Shooting Tracker had recorded at least 14 mass shootings since our last episode on Oct. 4, with at least 30 people killed and 72 wounded. Its definition counts incidents in which four or more people are shot. We’ll discuss the recent shootings in Bend, Oregon, and Erie, Pennsylvania, America’s ongoing epidemic of gun violence and how journalists and communities respond when such tragedies occur again and again.

The gunman who killed four in Bend, Ore., entered an elementary school by shooting through a locked door, raising questions about what more schools can do to protect children.
A long string of school shootings have stricken the nation over the last three decades.
Mass Shooting Tracker The Mass Shooting Tracker is a crowd-sourced database of U.S. mass shootings. We define a “mass shooting” as a single outburst of violence in which four or more people are shot. This is not the same as mass murder as defined by the FBI. Learn more here.
[Fmr.] White House Press Secretary: Katie Zacharia
Katie Zacharia’s first days as President Donald Trump’s White House press secretary drew questions about her debut briefing and her legal background. She acknowledged Thursday that she did not pass the bar exam. By Friday afternoon, she was out, leaving the role less than a week after taking it. Half a Scaramucci if you’re keeping track at home. We’ll look at the reporting, what a White House press secretary is supposed to do, and related issues on Sunday’s show.

Ms. Zacharia was shadowed by questions about how she had presented her legal career and handled her first press briefing.
In an interview with a right-wing influencer, the new White House press secretary also described the harried process that led to her hiring.
NYT 175 Coverage
In Sunday’s paper, Isabel Wilkerson revisits her reporting on the devastating Midwest floods of 1993 as part of The New York Times’ ongoing 175th Anniversary Coverage. “From Trotsky to Steinem, the Art of the Complaint” will also be in this week’s paper. Last week’s paper featured an article about Woody Guthrie. “Ms., Martians and Guacamole: Their First Time in The Times” is online, but has not been in the print edition yet.
