Elon Musk. USAID. Gaza. Tariffs. DEI. Greenland. Panama Canal. Grants. Employee Buyouts. Access to Treasury Department Data. Transgender Student Athletes. Department of Education. CIA Names. This is just the beginning.

As Sree Sreenivasan wrote in his latest Substack, “Donald Trump’s two weeks back in the Oval Office have been as predicted: flood the zone, create chaos, blame everything on non-whites, immigrants and liberals, rinse, repeat—but this all feels different. The unreserved, barely-coded racism and hate is overwhelming, all-encompassing, and on full public display. (“It's Only Been Two Weeks; Feels Like Two Decades,” Feb. 3, 2025). Trump 2.0 is already exceeding every expectation we had and not in a good way.

How do we explain his rise and resurgence? This week’s guest on Sree’s Sunday #NYTReadalong, Nirmal Ghosh, will provide some answers. He’s the author of “Backlash: Donald Trump and the Remaking of America.” I will be the guest host.

We will be live at 8:30 a.m. ET / 1:30 p.m. GMT / 7:00 p.m. IST (Sunday morning in the US, Sunday afternoon in the UK and Sunday evening in India). If you miss the show, you can always watch the replay, right on this page.

“Backlash” explores the long-term trends that have shaped America and that paved the way for the rise of Donald Trump. It examines “America's self-image, its conflicts within, how it sees the world, and the ramifications” of Trump’s return to Power (with a capital “P”).

Nirmal Ghosh enjoyed a 30-year career as a foreign correspondent for Singapore’s Straits Times. He is also a writer, podcaster, artist and wildlife conservationist. Here is some of Nirmal's poetry (Wild Cranes) and two of the organizations he works with (The Corbett Foundation and the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime.

I first interviewed Nirmal from his apartment in Washington, DC in September 2019.

Super Bowl

We don't usually spend a lot of time on sports, but the New York Times has a special section devoted to the Super Bowl in Sunday's paper.

You can see the cover to the right. If you're a fan of graphic design, sports journalism, or of course, football, you'll want to check it out. Click here for the .pdf (32 MB)

Next Week

We will take next week (February 16) off because of the Presidents’ Day holiday in the United States. Although it’s meant to celebrate George Washington and Abraham Lincoln’s Birthday, maybe we’ll see an Executive Order mandating that we celebrate Donald Trump. Is that really so far-fetched? Last Week Last week, Detria Everson, President and CEO of the John and Lillian Miles Lewis Foundation was our guest. She told us about ways the Foundation is celebrating what would have been Rep. John Lewis’ 85th Birthday, including the #JohnLewisSelfie campaign.
